Tunnel Vision on the Monsal Trail: Flat trail and rolling views.
There’s something quietly wonderful about walking a trail that used to hum with steam engines—and still hums now, albeit with birdsong and distant laughter. The Monsal Trail, stretching just over 8 miles, winds through the heart of Derbyshire’s Peak District. And the best part? It’s flat. Blissfully, beautifully flat. In a landscape known for its thigh-testing inclines, this retired railway line is a rare gift.
🚉 From Bakewell to Millers Dale and Back
We set off from the old Bakewell railway station, the morning air thick with promise (and the scent of pastries from the nearby cafés). With boots laced and cameras ready, we joined the trail and settled into its gentle rhythm—a smooth, level path flanked by dramatic limestone walls and sweeping views.
🌟 Tunnel Time
The Headstone Tunnel was, without doubt, the showstopper. Stepping into its cool shadows, lit only by spaced ceiling lights and the occasional echo of footsteps, felt like walking into a film set. That photo of the tunnel’s slow curve disappearing into light? It practically took itself.
☕ Coffee, Cake, and Comfort Food
Midway, we hit pause at Hassop Station Café—the kind of stop where a slice of cake tastes better because you feel you’ve earned it. Later, we reached The Anglers Restaurant at Millers Dale, where a hearty lunch awaited. Everything you want from countryside dining: honest, flavourful, and served with a smile.
🥾 Reflections on the Return
The route back felt like a gentle rewind: familiar landmarks revealing new angles, and that same flat path working its magic again. No aching calves, no steep climbs—just a contented stroll through layers of history and scenery.
